Laser scanner for BIM

Hi forum,

I recently deal with the field of laser scanning. I'd like to use a laser scanner for BIM (Building Information Modeling). What is your experience??

Best regards.

Scanning for BIM

Hi,

The laser scanner is perfectly suited for capturing existing buildings. If a BIM model shall be created in the scope of the reconstruction planning, laser scanning is a great method for capturing geometry, especially in case of complex buildings.

The laser scanner provides a point cloud (scans). This point cloud has to be transferred to BIM elements in a BIM system. There are various systems available such as Autodesk Revit or ArchiCAD.

Depending on the manufacturer, the import of point clouds into the BIM is defined. Autodesk can load point clouds directly. But the performance is limited. If you have hundreds of scans in case of large buildings, handling the point clouds often becomes slowly. In this case, you have to handle the data intelligently; many customers use PointCab software to derive 3D models from sectional views and plans.
