Reference ball vs. plastic ball

Why do I have to use a special laser scanning sphere (reference sphere)? Why shouldn't I use a plastic ball from the DIY superstore?

Reference spheres for laser scanning

Hi Nick,

At first view, a simple ball seems to be equal to a laser scan sphere from a professional provider for laser scanning equipment. But when you compare both spheres directly, you will see the better fabrication of the laser scan sphere. The scan sphere, that can be used for registration, is checked for accurate roundnesse and equipped with a special painting reflecting the scanner's laser beam optimally. If you like, I can send you a certificate of our spheres.

Only if you use registration spheres, you can guarantee the specifications of your scanner manufacturer and comply with the accuracies of your project.

I hope I could give a small overview and show the importance of scan spheres (reference spheres).
