PointCab has a very reasonable price, as of 1995€ excluding TAX for a dongle bound license as this post was written, compared to the other laser scanning software suites which are more than 3-4 times as much.
A recent usability study showed that, with PointCab, any inexperienced user can get results within 10 to 15 minutes. Those numbers are of a first-time use! So, the more often you work with PointCab, the better this time gets. A very swift learner in that study made his second run in 3 minutes – evaluation of a sectional drawing from a layout containing 17 scan positions. Evaluation time was 2 minutes on a 5-year-old ThinkPad with a 1,87 GHz Intel Core Duo CPU and 3 GB of RAM. This basically enables you to get the whole job done while being on the job site. For the first time, scanning is actually slower than evaluating. And don't worry: PointCab evaluates every single point in your point cloud (you can also choose which points shall be evaluated).
Eike and Eric, both worked in the fields of laser scanning for about a decade now and belong to the pioneers making laser scanning into what it is today.
