Cost-effective survey of towers and complex buildings

Measuring complex building structures as well as buildings which are difficult to access, like the tower in the example, are very demanding with traditional measurement methods.

In addition, difficult conditions for setting scaffolding and a restricted time period for the measurement often occur.

In this case, laser scanning is often a sensible alternative to the traditional survey with tachymeter.

The non-contact measurement per laser scanner provides a unique data quality

The non-contact measurement method of a laser scanner is perfectly suited for measuring round and complex building structures.

A laser scanner scans an object point by point and, thus immediately, records it completely. Meanwhile, modern laser scanner, like FARO Focus 3D or a Leica scan station C10, provide up to 1 million measuring points per second and define a new standard with this measuring rate. An object can be scanned completely and very quickly by several laser scanner positions. The result, a 3D point cloud, provides a precise scale image of the object to be captured.

Thus, the survey of the presented example could be performed simply and quickly and is reflected in a cost advantage - verifiably.

The point cloud as an intermediate result for the special software LupoScan

The point cloud is the result of the laser scanning survey. For solving the tasks (tower in the example), like the as-built-documentation for the future planning, the point cloud often has to be converted in 2D plans.

The point cloud is analyzed and interpreted with special laser scanning software. As a system house, we help our clients to choose the appropriate software from the software solutions which are available on the market in a variety and we provide professional support for a rapid success in projects.

In the presented case of application, the implementations have been accomplished with the software LupoScan.

LupoScan is a software for point clouds which is irrespective of vendor and can be used for applications including architecture, archaeology and monument conservation.

Implementation of elliptical and cylindrical point clouds

The implementation of towers is a very demanding effort in the range of architectural surveying. LupoScan provides a software solution which is very suited for this task due to efficient tools. An implementation of towers can be accomplished with elliptical and cylindrical objects for projection. The user gets a scale plan as a result of the implementation. The results can be processed in the common CAD solutions without any problems.

Of course, LupoScan can be tested free of risk at Laserscanning Europe. We welcome you to contact us.
