Successfully entrance into 3D Laserscanning

A successfully entrance into 3D Laserscanning with training from Laserscanning Europe

One offering of Laserscanning Europe GmbH is specific Laser Scanning training. In June 2009, M7 Technologies in Youngstown, Ohio requested a customer-specific training for 3D Laser Scanning for industrial applications.

Since 1918 the main business of M7 Technologies was to do precise metal work for the U.S. steel industry. To meet the demands of recent years, it became necessary to establish a department for industrial metrology. The new service has expanded quickly, so they now handle a substantial amount of customer orders. The company had been using high precision equipment - a Laser Scan Arm (Line Probe) and the Laser Tracker, so they decided to to expand their services to include a 3D Laser Scanning system as well to be able service this market.

The management realized immediately that the existing skills were not sufficient for offering the Laser Scanning service in the industrial market. Therefore, in addition to the purchase of a Laser Scanning system, they searched for advanced training to keep the standard of quality M7 Technologies’ customers are accustomed to. Mike Garvey, the president of M7 Technologies, , decided to consult the German company Laserscanning Europe, because  they offered the most comprehensive Laser Scanning training program of all the companies Mr. Garvey appraised.

Laserscanning Europe trained the employees from scratch in several areas.

The main focus of this training was:

Consulting:

  • Task definition of a project
  • The “on the market” availability of Hardware and Software solutions
  • Suggestions for the purchase for appropriate equipment (Scanner and total station)
  • Information for column-based systems

Preparation of a Laser Scanning project:

  • layout alignment of the CAD Files (plant layout) using the definition of a column-based system
  • solutions for placing references

Data collection:

  • combination of Laser Scanning and surveying
  • using  and processing the scanning procedure

Reporting:

  • Calculation and distribution of the references
  • Transformation to the column-based system
  • Scan data registration, transformation to the plant layout, filter and compression
  • Import the point clouds to CAD Software

Modeling:

  • Training for modeling in AutoCAD
  • Basics for processing data in Geomagic and Polyworks
  • Release files for the customer

To compile the learned knowledge, the entire workflow was shown in a practical demo project.

This project includes:

  • Assembly /configuration and initial measurement of a reference net
  • Site measuring via Laser Scanner
  • Reporting and registration of the data#
  • Processing the CAD file
  • Successful release of the files for the customer

Upon completion of the training, M7 Technologies is one of the leading companies in the market for performing Laser Scanning services. They currently are serving customers in the industrial, government and military sectors.
