European LIDAR Mapping Forum - Salzburg - 4-5 December 2012

ELMF 2011 PROVES A VIBRANT INDUSTRY

The second European LiDAR Mapping Forum (ELMF) was hailed a great success when it took place in the prestigious Congress venue in Salzburg last November 29 – 30th. Despite the economic downturn in Europe, the show reflected much positivity from the LIDAR industry, with a particularly animated conference. There were over 445 attendees from 40 different countries and interestingly, there were almost twice as many visitors from Eastern Europe as the first event, which took place last year in The Hague, Netherlands. The next event is scheduled to return to Salzburg from 4-5 December 2012.

A WELCOME RETURN TO SALZBURG

In 2011 when ELMF moved to Salzburg, the venue earned so much positive feedback from visitors and exhibitors alike that it simply had to return there for a second year. Director of ELMF, Versha Carter, explains, “We have been overwhelmed by delegates telling us how wonderful the venue was last year in Salzburg. The open-plan layout of the Congress building brought everyone together and was well-liked by delegates and exhibitors. Salzburg’s central location in Europe may have contributed to the increase in visitors from Eastern Europe, which is an important consideration for next year’s venue. Salzburg also provided a special dimension with its Christmas markets that delegates were able to enjoy, as well as the drinks reception on the opening night which was very popular for networking.”

POPULAR CONFERENCE REPRESENTS THRIVING COMMUNITY

Conference Chairman, Alastair MacDonald of TMS International, believed the 2011 conference programme represented a thriving community: “The quality of the papers presented at last year’s ELMF was outstanding. The reaction to the topics from the delegates showed how important and relevant the chosen subjects were to the LIDAR community. This has generated much excitement about 2012 and following the Call for Papers that will be launched soon, along with the technical committee I am looking forward to choosing more first class papers.”

LEADERS IN THE FIELD EXHIBIT

Running alongside the conference will once again be the exhibition with more than 60 leading companies expected to demonstrate new LIDAR products and a wide range of new technologies and services. Exhibitors historically include the LIDAR and complementary sensor manufacturers, survey service companies, data processing, GIS and management specialists and the latest mobile mapping vehicles. In 2011 with 59 exhibiting companies from 14 different countries, the number of exhibitors was up by over 15% on the last year and included the industry’s latest technologies and services, as well as an outside area displaying mobile mapping vehicles and systems. There were also a series of LIDAR and associated systems workshop sessions available for delegates, which were well attended and are due to take place again in 2012.
