FARO announces release of 3D scan processing software Scene 5.0

The new FARO laser scanner software Scene 5.0 is available for a few days. With the release of the scan processing software, laser scanner manufacturer FARO provides many new features for its clients.

These features include:

  • the Project Data Bank
  • the Project Point Cloud
  • the Fine Registration (targetless registration)
  • the support of the E57 laser scanner data exchange format
  • the stereoscopic visualization

More efficiency due to accelerated data post-processing and, thus, faster disposability of scan projects

Complete with 3D stereoscopic visualization, improvements to registration processes and new networking features, SCENE 5.0 delivers the most complete software solution for laser scanning applications.

Lake Mary, FL (March 19, 2012) – FARO Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: FARO), the world’s most trusted source for 3D measurement technology today announced the release of SCENE 5.0, the latest in the company’s line of point cloud capture processing software for the Focus3D. For the first time, SCENE users can view their scans in true stereoscopic 3D for unprecedented levels of realism. Automatic fine registration eliminates the need for artificial targets in many cases when piecing together multiple scans, and the new Project Database enables enhanced levels of networking between users.

SCENE 5.0 contains automatic fine registration, a new cloud-to-cloud enhancement that reduces or removes the need for the placement of artificial targets in many scanning applications, and significantly reduces post-processing time. Rather than utilizing spheres or checkerboards, the software identifies prominent objects such as corners, edges and other flat structures within the scan and uses them as reference points. These features help to seamlessly meld together multiple scans to form a single, complete point cloud. This new addition, unique to SCENE 5.0, further expedites the merging of scans between remote users.

The Project Database is FARO’s latest way to facilitate scanning project collaboration. This new addition seamlessly stores project information and a step-by-step history of each scanning project. Users may now return to any step in a scanning database, quickly and easily, no matter where they may be in their process. They may also select which details to display on a given project, allowing users to choose which level of detail to display and reducing extraneous data points. SCENE 5.0 also supports the new ASTM E57 industry standard, a manufacturer-independent, binary data exchange format for 3D data. Through this, users may import and export scanning data regardless of the specific product used to capture it.

New for SCENE 5.0, stereoscopic visualization allows users to view their scans on 3D-enabled monitors. The result is an added level of detail and a heightened sense of realism found in major motion pictures. For users in the real estate marketing, construction, renovation and other markets, this 3D viewing feature literally adds new dimensions to their scanning work. “SCENE 5.0 combines ease-of-use, networking and an enhanced 3D experience to deliver a complete scan processing solution,” said Oliver Burkler, Senior Technical Product Manager for the Focus3D.
