An agreement between Caterpillar and the LiDAR Division of Velodyne Acoustics, Inc. allows Caterpillar exclusive rights of use for Velodyne's patented HDL-64 LiDAR-sensing system. The agreement includes Velodyne’s LiDAR technology which will be installed on off-road vehicles and sued in the areas of mining and construction.
The agreement with Velodyne’s LiDAR Division provides a valuable tool for Caterpillar. Using the system, the safety on worksites shall be promoted and the efficiency of the operation shall be increased. By means of LiDAR technology, a scanning system installed on a vehicle can be used to immediately capture the surroundings. Afterwards, the scan data can be analyzed on the PC.
