Nokia is developing a 3D rival of Google Street View based on laser scanner technology
Nokia’s map service Naveteq is developing a 3D rival of Google’s Street View. Nokia’s solution is said to include 3D computer models of villages and citiesStreet View uses a sequence of 2D panorama photos for the Viewer. Nokia is developing a complete 3D rendering of areas and surroundings. That’s different from Google Street View.
The 3D effect shall be better than the panoramas of Street View. Nokia is thereby using the Journey View System. By the software City Scene, the panorama photos are totalled up to an entire sequence of pictures by the LiDAR data. In Google Street View, the user gets from one picture to another. The so-called “Truecar”is used for data acquisition.
They consist of high-resolution panorama cameras and additionally utilise laser scanners (LiDAR). Data acquisition by the “Truecar” is going to start in London in November. Afterwards, the acquisition is expected to start in other metropolitan areas.
