XGRIDS PortalCam

TitlePhotorealistic visualization
With the PortalCam, you can easily create photorealistic Gaussian splat models that can be used interactively. The device combines a powerful LiDAR sensor with a 4-camera system to accurately capture the environment. The recorded data is then processed in the Lixel Cyber Color software and calculated into detailed LCC models. Whether small objects or large areas such as castle complexes—with PortalCam, you can capture and virtually inspect them in just a few steps.

TitlePortalCam LiDAR
The integrated LiDAR scanner generates a high-precision point cloud that is used both for orienting the Gaussian splat images and for navigating within the data already captured. With a capture rate of up to 856,000 points per second and a field of view of 180° × 180°, it provides a reliable basis for accurate 3D models.
- Laser class: Class 1 / 940 nm
- Scanning range: 0.1 m – 30 m at 10% reflectivity, up to 60 m at 90% reflectivity
- Field of view: 180° × 180°
- Point rate: 856,000 points/second
TitlePortalCam Camera
The 4-camera system forms the heart of the PortalCam and enables the visualization of detailed, photorealistic LCC models. Two front cameras ensure precise capture of object details, while the two wide-angle cameras on the sides capture the surroundings. This creates a complete 360° LCC model.
- Image resolution: 4000 × 3000 px
- Sensor size: 1/2" CMOS
- Field of view wide-angle camera: 200° × 200° (each)
- Field of view front camera: 100° × 85° (each)
TitleLCC Scan App
The LCC Scan app, developed specifically for the PortalCam, combines intuitive operation with powerful tools for capturing camera data. You can create and manage projects directly in the app and switch between three recording modes (night, indoor, outdoor). During the scan, a point cloud is generated in real time so that you can keep an eye on the area that has already been captured at all times. In addition, the live data from one of the four cameras can be displayed directly on your smartphone—for maximum control during recording.
TitleLixel Cyber Color Studio Software
With Lixel Cyber Color Studio, your captured data is automatically processed into detailed LCC models. All you need to do is import the data and set the desired parameters—such as model quality, which also affects calculation time. In addition, practical tools are available for further processing:
- Trimming LCC models
- Integrating additional 3D models into the LCC model
- Cloud upload for easy collaboration and access
- SDKs for custom processing and integration
TitleWorkflow: From scan to LCC model
1. Capture
Move slowly around your object at different heights. Avoid jerky movements or quick changes of direction to ensure a smooth and complete capture.
2. Processing
Import the data captured with PortalCam into the LCC Studio software. Select the desired settings—the rest of the processing runs automatically without the need for manual intervention.
3. Further processing
Once your LCC model has been created, you can upload it directly to the cloud or edit it further in the LCC Editor. In addition, XGRIDS provides a range of SDKs for Unity, Unreal Engine, and web applications to integrate your models flexibly into different environments.

TitleWhat makes the PortalCam so special?
The XGRIDS PortalCam is the world's first portable handheld scanner that uses innovative 3D Gaussian Splatting technology (3DGS) to create realistic, walk-through 3D models. It combines LiDAR, a quad camera array, and automated processing to generate photorealistic 3D spatial landscapes in a single scan.
How it works: How 3D Gaussian splatting works.
Capture and sensors
Cameras (two front and two fisheye sensors) and a LiDAR sensor capture colors and depths. The PortalCam weighs less than 900 g, making it ideal for mobile use.
Automated processing with XGRIDS LCC
The scan is converted using an AI-based workflow in the “Lixel Cyber Color Studio” software and an LCC model (3D Gaussian splat scene) is calculated.
Representation in Gaussian Splats
Unlike traditional polygon mesh models, this method uses overlapping, soft 3D Gaussian splats that contain information about position, color, transparency, and shape. This enables realistic, volumetric rendering.
Rendering and real-time preview
The individual splats merge into seamless surfaces during display. Thanks to optimized GPU algorithms, rendering takes place almost in real time, making them ideal for VR/AR applications.

TitleAreas of application for the XGRIDS PortalCam
A particular advantage of PortalCam is its photorealistic representation and seamless immersion, which gives users a real sense of space. This opens up new possibilities in construction documentation, archaeology, the real estate industry, and creative production. At the same time, fast and mobile capture opens up new ways to plan projects more efficiently, build digital twins, and create immersive experiences for customers and partners.
TitleApplications
Whether for documentation, creative projects, or immersive experiences—the possibilities are virtually endless:
- Construction Documentation
Precise recording of construction sites and progress for planners, architects, and builders. - Archeology & Monument Preservation
Digital preservation of historical sites and artifacts—detailed and available long-term. - Film & Virtual Production
Creation of realistic scenes for visual effects, CGI, sets, and virtual production environments. - Game Development
Rapid generation of immersive environments and assets for developers and creative studios. - Real Estate & Interior Design
Photorealistic tours and visualizations of buildings, rooms, and facilities.
- Mapping
Capture large areas for GIS applications, landscape analysis, or urban planning. - Mobile scene capture
