Google sells Sketchup to Trimble

Google sells its 3D modeling software SketchUp to Trimble, a specialist for tracking systems. In 2006, Google has acquired the software and soon afterwards offered it for free. Today, SketchUp is one of the most used 3D modeling solutions.

Trimble acquires SketchUp and wants to invest in the software according to its own statements. Trimble wants to expand the 3D warehouse launched by Google together with Google. On the website, numerous models are available for free. SketchUp product manager John Bacus assumes that the sale will of benefit to SketchUp.

Trimble wants to contribute its know-how in the field of architecture, engineering and construction. Among other things, Trimble offers laser scanners for capturing buildings three-dimensonally.

The core team developing SketchUp at Google transfers to Trimble and shall advance the software there.

In March 2006, Google has acquired the ShetchUp developer @Last Software. In April 2006, Google has released the software in the form of a free version.
