FARO Focus3D presents no risk for the eyes

That‘s the result of a expert report by the laser security specialist Professor Schulmeister (Seibersdorf Laboratories in Austria). The laser scanner FARO Focus 3D is assigned to the second edition of class 3 according to IEC 60825-1. An analysis of the exposure to light of the eye under realistic and unrealistic exposure conditions has shown that the exposure doesn’t exceed the critical limit value for injuries of the retina. It may be concluded that the expected exposure doesn’t lead to eye injuries. From a medical point of view, wearing goggles (personal protective gear) is not necessary. Depending on the national industrial safety regulations (health and safety at work), wearing goggles could be regulated if the legal limit values for exposure are exceeded and an exposure of the eyes is possible.

Within the statutory requirements for safety at work, further actions (e.g. instructions for the staff) could be regulated. They are not subject of this expertise. The risk for eye injuries found out during this expert report could serve as a basis of decision-making for a risk assessment if the required means of protection shall be determined. According to this analysis, no special means of protection in the face of laser are necessary unless the legal provisions make them compulsory.
